A Glance at The Melaka Space Fair 2010

The MELAKA SPACE FAIR 2010 was a collaborated educational carnival between the Melaka Planetarium Adventure Science Centre (MPASC) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States with one mission in mind: Cultivate a passion in learning space science and engineering principles in fun, intuitive ways with the NASA team.

MELAKA SPACE FAIR was in fact the brainchild event which resulted from a discussion between MPASC and NASA in 2009. This esteemed event took place from the Nov 22nd to Nov 30th, 2010 at the Melaka Planetarium, MITC Ayer Keroh, Melaka.

The event was the FIRST to be hosted in this part of the world with an internationally recognized organization to provide an opportunity and exposure to NASA’s space engineering technology development among the Malaysian society and the entire region.

8 NASA professionals: Jaya Bajpayee (Program Executive for Operating Missions & Physics of the Cosmos Program), Dr. Natchimuthuk Gopalswamy (Astrophysicist), Dr. Madhulika Guhathakurtha (Heliophysicist), Margaret Srinivasan (Ocean Circulation Scientist), Deborah King Scherrer (Director, Stanford Solar Dynamics Observatory and Outreach), Kristen Ann Edwards (NASA STEM Education Professional), Thomas E. Nolan (Ocean Instruments Engineer-Scientist) and Paulo Younse (Robotics Engineer) played their roles along with 60 student facilitators from University Technical Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) whom were trained by the NASA team.

A clear highlight of the Melaka Space Fair 2010 was the hands-on activities, science talks, exhibition and Video Conference demonstrating basic space science and engineering principles in fun, intuitive ways.

The Melaka Space Fair 2010 was graciously sponsored by Maybank Berhad, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Eon Bank, Media Prima Berhad, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), Pine Concept Sdn Bhd and Protech Builders Sdn Bhd.
